Lawlessness has become ramped in our society. With wrong often being seen as right, it’s clear that our world has diverted far from the Biblical standard from which we are called to live in accordance to. On today’s episode of the Alex McFarland Show, Alex sits down with Pastor Duane Sheriff of Victory Life Church. Pulling concepts from his new book, Counter Culture, Pastor Duane talks about the difference between a Revival and a Great Awakening. He explains why he believes we are on the cusp of the next Great Awakening and shares how believers can be ready.

The spiritual condition of America, politics, culture, and current events analyzed through the lens of Scripture. Welcome to the Alex McFarland Show. In the Word of God in 1 Chronicles 12 in the Old Testament, 1 Chronicles 12, 32, it's speaks about the men of Issachar who understood the times to know what Israel ought to do.

Hi, Alex McFarland here. Thank you for listening to the program, and when the Bible in both Testaments talks about discernment, understanding the times, I would say for the church, it's to really see current events in light of the Word of God, a biblical worldview. And on this edition of the program, we're going to speak with a leader that is helping people do that, Pastor Dwayne Sherriff, who is a dear friend and colleague in ministry.

We'll talk about that. He's got a brand new book out called Counter Culture, and part of the copy on the cover says answering a woke culture with love, light, and life. Whenever a great thinker or communicator is critiquing wokeness and talking about where our culture is and really biblically where our culture ought to go, I'm eager to listen and learn. We're going to be blessed as we have a conversation with Pastor Dwayne Sherriff, and we'll drill down deeply in his new book, a resource that I would encourage you to check out, Counter Culture. Well, coming to us now from, I believe, Oklahoma.

Am I correct, Pastor Dwayne, that you are- Absolutely. God's country. God's country. Oklahoma. You know, it's been my joy to go out there and preach a number of times.

I do love Oklahoma for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is there's some really good barbecue out there. Absolutely. Yes. Well, hey, thanks for making time, and I do want to get into this excellent book that you've written. But first of all, bring people up to speed on kind of your background, your journey with the Lord, and your current areas of ministry, Dwayne. Well, I think the main thing the Lord called me to 35 years ago, 36 now, maybe almost 37, was the Pastoring of Victory Life. And it's a long story, but the bottom line is I was supernaturally led there. We started in a double-wide trailer with 30 people, and now we're a multisite church with thousands of members and thousands of active members in the kingdom of God.

And so those 35 years have been awesome. And during that time, even pastoring and pastoring multisite, we have 14 now, I traveled still a lot and did conferences, spoke in a lot of other churches. A lot of people call me pastor.

That's not a part of our system, our Victory Life system, but I help coach them and oversee things. And so God's just blessed me tremendously. Now I'm segwaying into traveling a little more. I've actually launched a new television ministry and outreach, and we're planning on going nationwide with the things that the Lord has done in my life, my heart, especially in regards to grace and truth. And I'm also doing conferences with my good friend Andrew Womack. You and I both know him.

And we both teach at his school, Carris, there in Woodland Park, Colorado. So it's been a privilege meeting you. Let me just back up and say it is a tremendous pleasure to be on the broadcast with you and an honor.

And I thank you for your courage to have you. Amen. Well, listen, I was going to bring up our mutual friend and my close friend and in many ways, mentor, Andrew Womack, what God is doing through Carris Bible College.

And folks, we've all done a lot of traveling. You and I both, Duane, have been privileged to preach the gospel in so much of the world. I don't think I'm overstating it at all to say that what I see God doing in Woodland Park up there at Carris Bible College, it is just miraculous, isn't it? It's absolutely miraculous. And I believe part of this book on counterculture came out of a conference I did a couple of years with pastors and Andrew and I both heard the Lord within days, just a couple of days.

We actually, I can't remember if I called him or he called me. We need to get that part of the story straight, but we both heard the Lord in regards to this great awakening and that we're in the infant stage, the beginning stage of a great awakening. And that's what this book literally came out of. I had the privilege and the honor of the publisher of my book and previous books was at that conference and he's the one that encouraged me that, look, you just shared some things in regards to the woke movement in balance and in truth. You need to write a book. And he's the one that literally encouraged me to pin my thoughts on how the church is called to be a watchman and that we need to be on the wall and be watchmen, not a wall like the church at large has been.

Yeah. Well, and you know, God is doing something, folks, and I want to get into the book. If you're just tuning in, we're talking with Pastor Dwayne Sheriff, a brother, a colleague and a friend. He's got a brand new book out, Counterculture, published by Harrison House, very wonderful book. And I want to get into that.

But two things, first, I want you to give a website. Where may people find the book and where can people find you online, Pastor Dwayne? Yeah, if you'll just go to PastorDwayne, Dwayne is D-U-A-N-E, PastorDwayne.com, that'll be our website. You can order the book online. It also shows you the different bookstores that have the book.

And so there's a lot of available, again, opportunities and places to be able to purchase the book. So I just encourage you to go to PastorDwayne.com. The other thing that I completely agree with is that we are, you said it well, in the infancy, in the beginning steps of the Third Great Awakening. And you know, folks, when you hear the phrase Great Awakening, in general, whenever ministers or Christians talk about the Great Awakening, first of all, in the 1700s, there was a Great Awakening under a man named Jonathan Edwards in New England. And then there was a great revival in the mid-19th century, often called the Second Great Awakening, under some people like Charles Finney and D.L.

Moody. And a lot of the great Christian work that we saw in the 20th century, R.A. Torrey, who came out of Moody Church in Chicago, and he went to California, and he started Biola University. And then, you know, there was Billy Sunday, who was the revivalist on the Saudus Trail. And then, of course, Billy Graham came along. And then we saw, you know, things like the Azusa Street revival, and a lot of what came up in really the 40s through the 90s in places, ultimately. I think about my friend Dr. Michael Brown and the Brownsville revival in Florida. Duane, I think you're right on the money when you talk about a third great awakening. And if there's one thing that I pray for, and this would turn the world upside down, it's unity within the body of Christ.

Absolutely. Let me just say this, too, Alex, that there's a difference between a revival and a movement that we call revivals and an awakening. A revival basically deals with our individual hearts, and changing us and our relationship with the Lord, our focus and refocus on the Lord, but a great awakening. It changes the culture, and it brings restoration. It brings reconciliation between groups.

That's one of the primary differences. All the reformations that we need, reforming of our police departments, our schools, our homes, on and on it goes. Yeah, it does start with individuals, but it has to go far beyond the individual and just a small segment of society.

We need a great awakening that brings an awareness of God's love, an awareness of the cross, and the redemptive power of the gospel and the cross. And that'll change our culture, because even our politics is downstream from culture. When I look at the corruption of our politics today, and the things that are promoted and that people are voting for, that's a testimony of poison in the culture. And unless we touch the culture, we're not going to see politics change.

We're not going to see reformation of our institutions, our colleges, our schools, etc., etc. We've got to take a brief break, folks. Stay tuned, we're going to continue our conversation with Pastor Dwayne Sheariff, his wonderful new book, Counterculture, and what your role can be, yes, your personal involvement in the revival and the awakening our nation so desperately needs. Stay tuned, folks, we're going to come right back after this.

Welcome back to the Alex McFarland program. We're talking with Pastor Gwen Chair. If I do want to remind people that Kerris Bible College that we spoke of, I would encourage you to Google that. Whether or not you're looking for furthering your Christian education or just learning Bible for personal enrichment, or you're interested in the school of practical government, biblical worldview, that I've had the privilege of creating a number of courses for Andrew on biblical worldview, just to see something God is doing that would greatly encourage you to see thousands of people, many young people, getting empowered, drilling down deeply into the Word of God, Google Kerris, and that spells C-H-A-R-I-S.

It's in Woodland Park, Colorado, Kerris Bible College. Pastor Gwen, I know probably before this year is out, you'll be up there to teach again, I would imagine, right? Absolutely.

Absolutely. I'll be up there a couple of times before the year ends. Myself included. So I'm excited about that. Well, I look forward to seeing you hopefully. And you know, folks, part of the reason that I wanted to have Gwen Sheriff on, there's a lodge where the faculty stays when we go up there to teach. And oftentimes, sitting around the table, we have some really good fellowship and some powerful times of prayer up there, just the faculty sitting around talking about the things of God, don't we? Amen. Yeah, it's a wonderful atmosphere.

I believe it's one of the leading schools in America today, and that a part of this great awakening, third grade awakening, will be spearheaded out of Woodland Park. It's amazing what God is doing there, and I'm honored to be a part of that as well. Let me tell you something I think God revealed to me, and then I want to get to your book. But probably seven or eight years ago, I was up there with Dr. Mark Cowart, also one of my keenest friends and mentors. And I believe Mark wrote the forward for your book, didn't he?

Yes, he did, and did a wonderful job. Mark and I were up there, and Andrew was showing us around, and they were pushing dirt around, and it dawned on me. Probably Carris Bible College is the highest altitude of any Christian college in North America. I mean, you know, it's 9,000 feet above sea level, and this is what I felt like the Lord put on my heart that God was going to start a great movement at this very high level, and it was just going to trickle down. And we prayed. We stood there where the big auditorium is now, and we prayed that the move of God ignited there would trickle down to the entire continent.

Amen. But the book, Counterculture, now explain the title. Is it that the people of God are swimming upstream against the grain of culture?

That is the biblical worldview, but unfortunately, much of the church is flowing downstream with the world and has become a subculture. And I deal with the difference between culture, subculture, and counterculture. A subculture has familiar language, values, and you kind of go along to get along. But within a counterculture, there's opposition.

Within a counterculture, you are going upstream with God in a world going downstream with evil. And that creates uncomfortable situations and the need for discernment, the need for wisdom, the need, how do we address things and do it in love? And so the church is called to be sober and humble.

We have an awesome assignment in the world. Just like man has lost his identity, and we see this identity crisis in our culture, identity confusion, well, there's individual identity confusion still in the church. But let me just say, Alex, that I really believe the church is suffering from an identity crisis. We don't know who we are. We don't know why we're here. We don't know what our mission is, much less how to accomplish that mission. We are not engaging in spiritual warfare for lots of different reasons.

We won't have time to get into all that today. But because we're not even aware of the spiritual battle that is raging, we also are not engaged. And the best way to lose a war, I mean, the best way to lose a war is to not know you're in one.

Wow. And there needs to be an awakening. That is profound. Say that again, to lose a war. The best way to lose a war, and make no mistake about it, we are experiencing a war between good and evil, and not just good, but man's good versus God's good, and evil. And the best way to lose that war, which we're losing, we're not having the impact we're supposed to have.

We're not being salt. We're being trot under the foot of men, and we're not being the light or the city set on a hill. And the reason we're losing that war is we don't know we're in one. And once the awakening happens, that's the beginning of real cultural change, political change, educational change, civil rest, and harmony within our culture, and differences. All that begins with the awakening, but then there's the discernment now, what do we do?

How do we be the light we're called and be the salt we're called? And we're so far from the doing because we don't even know we're in this battle. Let me read a passage, there's a section of the book called At War With Evil. And it says, we have allowed moral absolutes to be replaced by moral relativity and evolving truth.

Now listen to this, folks, from the book by Dwayne Sheariff, history has proven that once you remove God and moral absolutes from any society, death, destruction, and human suffering aren't far behind. That's really true, and you talk about that these things are of ultimately demonic activity. In the American church, much less in the culture, we don't hear much, if anything, about spiritual warfare, demonic activity. It's important that people get reacquainted and informed, accurately informed about supernatural warfare, isn't it? Absolutely, and again, the extent of most Christians today in any spiritual war or activity would be to simply pray, but like faith without works is dead, prayer without works, prayer without action is dead. And let me just say this to you, Alex, that I believe is something the Lord revealed, and that I wrote a whole chapter in the book on the armor of God.

The culture is literally demanding. They're not even asking anymore, but they're demanding unilateral disarmament of our spiritual weapons. When you look at Ephesians 6 and Corinthians 10 and just the weapons of our warfare, those six weapons are under demonic assault today, and to operate in any measure of the armor of God will have absolute oppositions at your door. And because we have been this subculture for so long instead of a counterculture, most pastors even are unwilling to engage with the girdle of truth, that truth is the only hope of the world and deliverance and freedom, and yet we're saturated with lies and believing lies and operating in all these lies.

And if you begin to even expose the lies with the truth, you'll be falsely accused and accosted. The breastplate of righteousness, the war we're in is not just good and evil. It's man's definition of good, eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil versus eating of the tree of the cross and the knowledge of God. God is the only one that knows good. God is the only one that can tell us and define what good is. And once we turn from God, we adopt a good that literally is evil. It's man interpreting his own definition of good. The president of the United States just yesterday, driving down the road, there was a clip played on the radio, the national news, where he talked about all these hormone blockers and us supporting gender transition was love, that it was moral.

He literally said it is immoral to deny them this transition and that it was moral what he was supporting. Now that's man who doesn't know God and what he calls good is evil. And evil he calls good, Isaiah 5.20, and that's what we see in the culture.

If you tune into the six o'clock news, the only way you're going to get any understanding is if like me, you suffer from dyslexia. Everything is backwards and good is called evil. Evil is called good.

Light is called dark, et cetera, et cetera. In Acts 17, the Lord spoke this to me and I wrote it in the book. When the apostles came to a certain area, they acknowledged those that have turned the world upside down have come among us. We've lost that within the church. We would rather be nice and allow ignorance to destroy people's lives. And I know kindness is a fruit of the spirit.

There's a difference between kindness and being nice. But the world is asking us to do things Jesus wouldn't have even done. And we have to put on this full armor.

One more thing quickly. I just thought one of the biggest revelations in that armor is our feet being shod with the gospel of peace. I went to great extents to explain because a lot of Christians won't speak up. They won't minister to their families because they want to keep peace. That peace is the goal. And yet the Bible teaches in Psalms 28.3 that David's saying, do not take me away with the wicked or be destroyed with those that are in iniquity and who speak peace to their neighbors but have evil in their heart. A sign of the end days will be they'll be hollering peace, peace, peace, and sudden destruction comes upon them. So it's the gospel of peace, not peace. I am not at peace.

The church is not at peace with darkness. We can't be. We must be. I just want to take a brief break. Pastor Dwayne Sheriff is a guest today here on the Alex McFarland show. We're going to take a break. Stay tuned. We're going to come back and talk more about being countercultural. Don't go away. Fox News and CNN call Alex McFarland, a religion and culture expert.

Stay tuned for more of his teaching and commentary after this. In recent years, our nation has suffered greatly, and we seem to be on a rapid moral decline. We've rejected God, morality, and we've almost completely lost our sense of patriotism. It's no wonder that many are asking the question, is this the end of America? Hi, Alex McFarland here, and I want to make you aware of my book, The Assault on America, How to Defend Our Nation Before It's Too Late. You know, our nation has seen politicians that are corrupted by greed, and they've got a vested interest in power, and many of our elected officials seem to care little about the country that they've been appointed to serve. Read my book, The Assault on America, we can stand up for our great nation and defend America before it's too late.

It's available everywhere, you can learn more on my own website, which is alexmcfarland.com. Read the book, The Assault on America, How to Defend Our Nation Before It's Too Late. He's been called trusted, truthful, and timely. Welcome back to the Alex McFarland Show. Welcome back to the program, Alex McFarland here, having a great time talking about the things of the Lord regarding his book, Counterculture. By the way, folks, I know it's the fall of 2022, but next summer, 2023, again, I will be at the Billy Graham Training Center in western North Carolina, the Cove, July 7 through 9.

Now, I'll be finishing up my study of 1 and 2 Peter. The theme for next summer, and this would make a great Christmas gift. It would be a great gift to give to your pastor or just come. If you've ever been to the Cove, the Billy Graham Conference Center, oh my goodness, it is beautiful.

The food is amazing. Every morning getting up to see the sunrise over those Appalachian Mountains, you will feel close to the Lord. You really will. But the theme is thriving till he comes. First and second Peter, I did first Peter last summer. We'll be doing second Peter, and I just want to thank Will Graham and his great staff for having us. Now, it always fills up, and there are people from all over North America, and we'll pray together. We'll fellowship. We'll drill down deeply into the Word of God, July 7 through 9, and the website is thecove.org.

You can also find my travel schedule at my own website, which is alexmcfarland.com. Well, Pastor Dwayne Sheriff is a close friend and author of a brand new book, Counterculture, published by Harrison House. You can find it everywhere, I'm sure. Pastor Dwayne, earlier in the program you mentioned that Victory Life Church, did I hear you say you have 14 campuses? Correct.

Praise God. Give your phone numbers if you would. Yeah, you can call to order Counterculture at 580-4040 DSM.

That's 580-4040, and then 396 is the letters DSM. And you can order the book, you can get any information about our locations and where they're located, obviously, where you can, I believe, be blessed. Amen. If you listen to this, I was prepping for my conversation with you, and I was reading that in the first 10 months of 2022, because as you and I record this, it's October, in media coverage, news coverage about America, 440 times the word lawless was in news coverage. People's reporting, talking about lawlessness, anarchy, caste. What does that say, Pastor Dwayne, when the news coverage over 400 times, and the year isn't even over, over 400 times are major cities being described as lawless? Well, it also, in their innocence, have revealed the title of Satan.

One of his many titles is the lawless one. When you see lawlessness like we're seeing, that is a manifestation of demonic activity against spiritual warfare. And boy, when you see the things that are being promoted in the name of love, in the name of good, they are evil. And there's a spirit behind that, and we have to counter that with the truth, and that truth be spoken in the love of God, and part of the subtitle of the book is dealing with the woke culture of hate, of death, and darkness. That's always been a part of our world, Alex, but today that's the dominant culture. We are having to raise our children and our grandchildren in a culture of literal hate, a culture of death. It's like a cult of death and the celebrating of death and the shedding of innocent blood and people's hunger to either sacrifice their children in abortion, or if the child survives, we are putting them at high risk in these schools of perversion and grooming them for perversion.

And what's sad is how can I be controversial in the things I'm saying and not these things highly controversial? And yet God has called us to deal with hate and counter it, not with hate. Martin Luther King Jr. said you can't overcome hate with hate. So the church can't be self-righteous, condescending, and respond in hate, but we have to respond with God's love to overcome this hate, but we have to even redefine that in the culture. People don't know even in the church what love and God's love looks like. And then all the death has to be countered with life, eternal life, and then the darkness with light, the light of the gospel, the power of the cross.

I'm not ashamed of the gospel, it is the power of God unto salvation. The gospel and the full gospel, the gospel that Paul preached that if anybody preaches another gospel, Galatians chapter 1 says we'll be accursed. We got to get back to the gospel Paul preached that makes us a counterculture in the love of God and the answer of reconciliation in all of these issues.

The word is the answer. Amen. Well, you mentioned Isaiah 5.20 where it says, you know, woe to those who call good evil and evil good. But we're living in those times, I mean.

We are. The Church of Jesus Christ proclaims salvation to the world and the world says that's not a good thing. The Church of Jesus Christ calls out sin and gives people the pathway to deliverance and the world says that's hate speech.

I mean, we really are in an upside down time, aren't we? Absolutely. And it's going to take great courage and conviction and passion. One of the things that I deal with in the book is politics and the role of politics. And we have so many young pastors, especially today, have such a fear of politics getting into the pulpit. And if you're listening right now, you need to know I'm in agreement that politics in the pulpit is poison. It'll compromise the faith. It will take away the holiness and sanctity of the pulpit. But if we don't take the pulpit to our politics, our politics are going to lead to all this Marxism, which is a anti-God government that leads to great death, pain and human suffering. Now let me just say this too, that a lot of people say, well, that's the world. And if we become a Marxist and socialist now evolving into a communist country, then the nation will suffer. No, if this nation suffers, fails and falls, the whole world is affected in a negative way. And if the world and the nation are affected in a negative way, we are deceived if we think it's not going to affect the church and our witness and ability to preach the gospel without fear of persecution, prosecution or execution in these last days.

Wow. Well, we've only got a minute or two left, but brother, give us a vision for what we can do as individual people. We love the Lord.

We love our country. We want to love our neighbor and care about the souls of people. What do you say that people should do at these times?

Well, I'll try to hurry, but I do have an entire chapter in there in the book on what do we do? The first thing is we got to get better equipped. We need reacclimated to truth, to the word of God that sanctifies us first. We've got to adopt a sober attitude of our identity and humility that when we address these things, we are not to address them in arrogance or rude or be mean or mean-spirited.

We're going to be accused of that no matter what, but we don't need to be found guilty of it. We truly need to know what the word of God says, have the passion of our convictions and begin to share at least the truth in love. From there, we need to get involved in voting our conscience again like this nation was set up in the first place and voting for people that are the closest to our biblical worldview and convictions. There are no perfect politicians. There's not even any perfect preachers.

So we're not looking for a perfect politician, but I'm going to vote for people that agree with me at least 70% of the time, and I'm not going to vote for anybody that disagrees with me 100% of the time. We need to get involved with our children's lives again, their education, get involved in our school board meetings, get involved in what's being taught them, get all this pornography out of our schools. We've got to protect our children. We're not talking about persecuting or attacking anyone that is embracing darkness, but we can't allow darkness to defile our moral innocence of our children, and a part of love is protecting our kids.

Absolutely. We've got to get back involved in our churches and bring them to a place of a counterculture, leadership within the churches. We've got to repent.

Five, Alex, think about this. I know you know this, you're a Bible scholar, five out of the seven churches in the book of Revelation, after Jesus was raised from the dead, five of the seven, he rebuked and called them to repent or he would remove their candlestick. So churches are not reopening across this country, and in some cases it's God. They've not been faithful to the gospel.

They've not been faithful to the kingdom of the gospel. It has to be preached or the end won't come. So I just encourage people, I could go on for hours.

I know we're out of time, but I do encourage you to get the book. We didn't even talk about Marxism in the culture, and I didn't even see it for years, and now it's like I see it everywhere that I understand the great awakening. Pastor Duane, you are so right that we are in a culture where it's light versus darkness. I want to say this as we have a call to action. Folks, obviously I hope you're praying for our country, and I hope you yourself are walking with the Lord Jesus Christ more than ever. Look, it is imperative, if you're a born again believer, to walk with Jesus, be in the word every day, believe what God's word says, be in prayer, be a witness, influence others. But let me say this also, Pastor Duane, and I want you to have the final word.

I believe the body needs to fall in love with the body. In other words, Christians need each other. I grew up Presbyterian. I came to the Lord really through a Baptist church, and then in the last 30 years plus, my wife Angie and I, we've had the privilege of ministering in more than 2,000 churches throughout North America, Pentecostal, Word Faith, Reformed, Calvinist, Charismatic, white churches, white churches, and let me say this.

First John 5.1 says, whoever believes Jesus is the Son of God is born of God. I want to say this. We need each other. Church.

Absolutely. And Pastor Duane, I've done biblical worldview weekends twice. I was invited in Catholic churches to come in, teach biblical worldview, share the gospel, give an altar call. Look, I don't care if you sleep in the pews or jump over them. Look, we need each other, church. Amen. And if you're a follower of Jesus, we're family. Let's unite. Let's pray. Let's call our culture back to Jesus as your book so eloquently lays out, Duane. Well thank you for that. And again, to affirm what you're saying, by this, shall all men know you're my disciples.

By what? That you have love, one for another. So it's the lack of love for Jesus, the head of the church that has created a lack of love for his body, the church. So what's the answer? The answer is in the book of Revelation, come back to our first love.

I've had to process, Alex, why do some of the things I say become so offensive to certain people or groups? It truly boils down to your loyalty. Where's your loyalties?

Where does your loyalty lie? Are you married to Jesus or married to politics? Are you married to Jesus and loyal to him and love him and now his body? Or do you love man's opinions, philosophies, thinking, on and on it goes. It's all going to come back to our loyalty to Jesus.

And if you say you love Jesus, you have to love his word. Amen. Well, it's been a joy to have this conversation with you.

I hope we can visit again very soon. Again folks, the book Counter Culture by Duane Sheriff, it's well written, it's inspiring, it's informative, and the book will motivate you to take a strong stand for truth, to love the Lord, and to be a part of what God can do to usher in that third grade awakening and to help save our nation. Folks, you can listen to this again. I would encourage you to share this, forward it along. It'll be at alexmcfarland.com and all the platforms where you listen to podcasts and radio shows as well.
